Baruj Salinas: 1972-2022

A thematic survey of the acclaimed Miami-based Cuban American painter’s abstract work, Baruj Salinas: 1972–2022 spans a half century of his artistic career. Whether imagining landscapes, seas, skies, or cosmic space, Salinas continually attempts to give shape to the formation of the universe, combining a vision of elemental flux and transformation with the traces of ancient alphabets or an imaginary language. The exhibition features forty works borrowed from Miami collections and includes paintings, works on paper, glazed ceramics, and an artist’s book.

Baruj Salinas: 1972-2022 is produced by the Cuban Legacy Gallery, MDC Special Collections at Miami Dade College, in collaboration with the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora. Exhibitions of the Cuban Legacy Gallery are made possible by the generous support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. This PINTA TALK featuring fiber artist Pip Brant, Aurora Molina and Evelyn Politzer is moderated by Adriana Herrera PhD, cofounder of Aluna Art Foundation. They will discuss politically-charged fiber arts and ways of exploring the relationship between gender, history, and fiber ancestral traditions and its connection with contemporary textile art.

Zoom Talk | Threading the City’s virtual panel discussion

The Circularity of Textile Time features art historian and Pre-Columbian Art experts Carol Damian, Ph.D., and Shelley Burian, Ph.D., moderated by Adriana Herrera, Ph.D. The discussion will explore the relationship between pre-Hispanic textiles and modern fiber art and examine the living presence of indigenous art not only in contemporary artists who are direct descendants of native peoples, but also in other Latin American artists, including some Miami artists who work with fiber.
