Architectures of Imagiination

“The dreamer always has a cloud to transform.” Gaston Bachelard

Architectures of Imagination brings together different types of poetic constructions in clouds, reminding us why Bachelard associated them in Air and Dreams with the mobilizing power of invention and its transformations. The exhibition includes photographs of ephemeral abstract sculptures built over the course of a single night using the furniture of hotels, and land-art installations with objects that teach ways of building a house with playing cards, or books set across rocks or seas. The garden displays a levitating sculpture hanging from trees, and a luminescent one whose tall metallic form bends as delicately as a slight fold of paper. There is also a playful structure designed to create alternate passages of time. This theme is captured inside as well, where a video replaces the minute hand of a clock with branches that mark the rhythm of waves. Another video recreates the possibility of entering into a historic painting, extending its lines into the real walls of the Tower Hotel.

The curatorial vision of Aluna Art Foundation includes in this exhibition an autonomous, self-contained vegetal world that offers us multiple angles to observe how nature organizes itself. Certainty, beyond the individual authorship of all these artistic constructions, there is a convergence that brings them close to C. G. Jung’s intuition of the unus mundus. This mirror-like relationship between human psyche and matter brings the images and symbols we conceive closer to the patterns of nature, as part of a unity we do not always perceive between what exists and who we are.

At the same time, the totality of all these works—impossible in a certain sense, yet boasting a powerful, undeniable existence—constitutes tangible proof that it is possible to cultivate, with the water and air of dreams, creative experiences that shift the limits of the established world. They open the door to the possibility of transfiguring it through the incandescent power of imagination.

This exhibition was made possible with the support of the Barlington Group and the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.
