Aluna Art Foundation will present an exhibition of the work of photographer Cristóbal Herrera (Havana, 1971) to inaugurate its space Focus Locus, a gallery devoted to the contemporary debates on photography. Entitled “Los Hijos de la Isla” and curated by Aluna Curatorial Collective (Adriana Herrera and Willy Castellanos), the show gathers together a selection of 9 images included in Herrera’s extensive essay on the island between 1994 and 2004.
“The Sons of the Island” opens a door onto the endearing universe of childhood in the skeptical Cuba of the end of utopia. Through a tender gaze, tinged with the humor of the childish and the implausible, the photographer determines the keys to his essay, rescuing a collective universe of remembrances lost in the folds of memory and time. In this non-adult space captured and recorded by the lens, the venerable frame of an abandoned truck will have the chance to become the brand new car that will transport many people towards an unforgettable dream. What society discards, declaring it useless, the children in his images transform into a wonderful place for games and communication. Such is the capacity of childhood to build an alternative reality, a space for co-existence in the margins of an official world that has – like coins − two unavoidable faces: the reality established by adults and their rules, and the one imposed by the context in an enveloping way.
In Cuban photography of the past three decades, childhood has been a rhetorical figure, an image supporting the myths of hope and optimism of the “New Man” and his social project. Herrera revisits the subject, establishing a gaze that becomes inserted in the existing archive, and confirming the multiplicity of the real and its outlines.
“The Sons of the Island” opens a mosaic of personal experiences on the subject, while it traces, at the same time, the sketch of a social reality that brews up the non-taste of underdevelopment and the joy derived from a hope that is difficult to crush.
The winner in 1999 of the Job Swart Master Class granted by the World Press Photo Foundation, Cristóbal Herrera currently lives in Miami, where he works as a photo-journalist for The Sun Sentinel newspaper, Broward County.

Aluna Art Foundation presentará una exhibición del fotógrafo Cristobal Herrera (La Habana, 1971) en la apertura de su espacio Focus Locus, un sala dedicada al debate contemporáneo en torno a la fotografía. Titulada Los Hijos de la Isla y curada por Aluna Curatorial Collective (Adriana Herrera y Willy Castellanos), la muestra reúne un conjunto de 9 imágenes perteneciente a un extenso ensayo que Herrera realizara a través de isla entre 1994 y el 2004.
Los Hijos de la Isla abre una puerta entrañable al universo de la niñez en la Cuba escéptica del fin de la utopía. En una mirada tierna, matizada por el humor de lo pueril y lo inverosímil, el fotógrafo establece las claves de su ensayo, rescatando un universo colectivo de recuerdos perdidos en los pliegos de la memoria y el tiempo. En este espacio no-adulto que el lente registra, la venerable carcasa de un camión abandonado podrá convertirse en el flamante carro que llevara a muchos hacia un sueño inolvidable. Lo que la sociedad desecha decretando como inservible, los niños de sus imágenes lo convierten en lugar maravilloso de juegos y comunicación. Es esa capacidad de la niñez de construir una realidad alterna, un espacio de convivencia al margen de una oficialidad que tiene -como las monedas-, dos caras ineludibles: la realidad que establecen los adultos y sus reglas, y aquella que impone el contexto de forma envolvente.
En la fotografía cubana de las últimas décadas, la niñez ha sido una figura retorica, una imagen sustentadora de los mitos de esperanza y optimismo del “Hombre nuevo” y su proyecto social. Herrera revisita este espacio, estableciendo una mirada que se inserta en el archivo existente dejando por sentado la multiplicidad de lo real y sus esquemas. Los Hijos de la Isla abre un mosaico de vivencias sobre el tema mientras traza, al unísono, el bosquejo de una realidad social que cocina el sin-sabor del subdesarrollo y la alegría de una esperanza difícil de doblegar.
Ganador en 1999 del Job Swart Master Class otorgado por la World Press Photo Foundation, Cristobal Herrera vive actualmente en Miami donde trabaja como foto-reportero para el periódico Sun Sentinel del condado de Broward.
