March 23, 2013 at 7:00pm. * As part of the exhibition “The Island Re-Portrayed: Raul Cañibano, a retrospective vision (1992-2012)”

The Latin-American Photographers Collection of PHotoBolsillo (La Fabrica, Spain) recently published a new book of Cuban documentary photographer Raúl Cañibano. With a foreword written by Willy Castellanos and Adriana Herrera (Aluna Curatorial Collective), the book contains 63 B/W photographs made by Cañibano between 1992 and 2012 in Cuba.

The PHotoBolsillo is the basic library for Spanish, African and Latin American photographers. Each issue is devoted to a single photographer and his most significant images, and includes an introductory text by a leading critic which helps to contextualize the creator’s work.

PHotoBolsillo had been published since 1998. Chema Conesa is the director of the library of Spanish photographers library and since September 2010, Alejandro Castellote directs the African and Latin American library, published in collaboration with the AECID. With Fernando Gutiérrez design Photobolsillo Collection is a must to understand an important part of contemporary photography.

Cañibano’s gaze redefined the image of the common man in Cuba at the crossroads of the centuries, shifting the concept of reality towards areas that were not stamped with the heroic view of the person as a social being. His anthropocentric vision examines the figure of the generic man from the extremely vast record of what constitutes him and makes him as common as unique; as powerful as vulnerable; as comic as tragic, and as solitary as supportive. Cañibano’s photographs contain a lesson of proximity that goes beyond the scorching sun of ideologies and the shade of time: they enlighten the human condition and the link that ties us to others.
